Surge Protection for LED Lighting
Surge protection devices (SPDs) protect LED fixtures, LED drivers, and other components of a lighting system against high voltage spikes and transients. Such voltage spikes can be caused, for example, by lightning strikes or power grid disturbances and can damage electronic components.
LED Goeroe supplies professional Philips surge protection devices for lighting installations. These protection components are particularly well-suited for outdoor lighting and applications where reliability, longevity, and minimizing maintenance costs are important.
Philips Surge Protection Devices
Philips surge protectors are designed to protect the entire lighting system against high voltage spikes. The product line includes models for protection classes I and II, and customers can choose between series and parallel connections.
The current Philips SPD series offers protection against surges of up to 10 kA and 10 kV. This makes these components particularly well-suited for professional outdoor lighting, such as road and street lighting, site lighting, and other installations in locations where there is an increased risk of overvoltage.
Serial and Parallel SPD Protection
With a parallel-connected SPD, the fixture continues to function even if the surge protector fails. With a serial SPD, the circuit is interrupted when the protector fails. As a result, with a serial configuration, it is immediately apparent that the surge protector needs to be replaced.
Which version is most suitable depends on the installation, the fixture, the required protection class, and the desired maintenance strategy.
Why Use Surge Protection?
LED drivers and LED modules contain sensitive electronic components. A suitable SPD helps prevent damage caused by extreme voltage spikes, thereby contributing to a longer service life and greater reliability of the entire lighting system.
